However, while the convenience is undeniable, this on-the-spot rental approach has several potential downsides that are often overlooked.

This article aims to shed light on the less obvious downsides of renting Pocket WiFi at Japan's airports and suggests a more reliable alternative which is ordering your Pocket WiFi online.

Risks of Renting WiFi Routers at Airports

This section discusses potential risks when renting Pocket WiFi at Japan's airports, such as higher costs, issues with flight delays, and potential long queues.

1️⃣ Higher costs

Have you ever found things to be cheaper at airports? Probably not. The same logic might apply to renting Pocket WiFi from airport counters. Due to the higher operational costs (rents + many cases commissions on top of that) at airports, these expenses could be passed on to customers in rental fees resulting in higher prices.

While it's not a certainty, it's probably worth considering, especially for travelers on a budget.

2️⃣ Potential flight delays and missed flights

After Covid, Japan has seen a rapid increase in tourists. This surge, combined with the more frequent flight delays, creates a unique challenge for those relying on airport Pocket WiFi rentals. (And yes, Japan's airports are busier than ever before.)

Understandably, many (if not all) of these rental counters do not operate 24/7. If your flight is delayed (or you missed your flight) and you arrive after hours, you could find yourself facing closed counters.

You never really know if your flight will be on time or not – that's just how flying works. Sometimes flights can be delayed for 4, 5, 6 hours, or even more.

3️⃣ Possible long queue at rental counters

Another risk to consider when renting Pocket WiFi at the airport is the potential for long waiting times. With the influx of travelers flocking to Japan post-Covid, airport rental counters can get extremely busy, especially during peak travel seasons or flight arrival times. This means you could end up standing in a long queue, waiting to get your device, when you could be starting your adventure in Japan.

The Smarter Alternative: Online Ordering

This section discusses the benefits of ordering your Pocket WiFi online before traveling to Japan, as opposed to renting upon arrival at the airport on the spot.

Advantages of online ordering

The primary benefits of ordering your WiFi router online prior to arriving in Japan include better pricing, guaranteed availability, and peace of mind.

Cost-Effective and Diverse Options

One major (and obvious) benefit of ordering online is cost-effectiveness. Online services, free from the high overheads of airport counters/booths, tend to provide more competitive pricing. This can result in noticeable savings, especially if you’re staying in Japan for weeks or more (longer stays).

Another advantage is the breadth of choices available online. You can explore various plans and pick one that best fits your data needs and budget constraints. On the other hand, it would be quite challenging to compare multiple options and plans at airport counters within a limited time frame.

Secure and Hassle-Free

Ordering your Pocket WiFi online for pickup at your accommodation or a local post office in the city is probably the safest option. It eliminates the worry about flight delays or having to rush to the airport counter before it closes.

Online ordering also ensures the availability of the specific plan you've selected, unlike the uncertainty that can come with last-minute, on-the-spot rentals at the airport.

Tip; to help you navigate from the airport to your accommodation or pick up point, offline maps are a valuable tool. Google Maps and Apple Maps both allow you to download maps beforehand, ensuring you can find your way without needing an immediate internet connection. This is especially helpful when public WiFi is spotty and unreliable (they are in Japan).

Speaking of public WiFi, it’s worth noting that Japan’s international airports provide free WiFi. This can be useful for quick checks right after your arrival. They are not super fast but quite good actually.

Conclusion

To wrap up, while on-the-spot Pocket WiFi rentals at Japan's airports may appear convenient, they come with potential pitfalls such as higher costs, the risk of unavailable services due to flight delays, and time-consuming queues sometimes.

In contrast, ordering your Pocket WiFi online is a safer, more cost-effective alternative. It does require a little bit of planning beforehand but ensures that your device is ready at your accommodation or at a local post office, regardless of any travel delays or travel schedule changes. This approach, coupled with the use of offline maps and airport WiFi, should offer a smoother start to your journey in Japan.

For those looking to explore online options, we at eConnect Japan offers a range of affordable Pocket WiFi rental plans that you can easily order ahead of your trip. In fact, these plans almost always come with a Fair Usage Policy. We have a dedicated article that explains what this policy is and why it exists (link below). Essentially, it's a strategy implemented by network carriers to prevent excessive data usage, ensuring that everyone can have the best experience with mobile internet service.

What’s Fair Usage Policy? The reasons behind this exponential growth include;

The growing use of videos and high-resolution images in social media services.

The increasing demand for (and popularity of) streaming services, particularly YouTube and Netflix.

Smartphones with high-quality cameras, resulting in photos and videos taken being data-heavy.

Increased use of cloud storage apps (like iCloud, Google Photos, Dropbox) for saving photos and videos, often with auto-sync features.

The roll-out of faster mobile internet, such as 5G, in many countries.

According to Wikipedia, global mobile data traffic has been doubling every year for the last 5 years. These stats highlight the challenges network providers face in managing this increased traffic while maintaining quality mobile internet service for their users. This is not just an issue for large western conglomerates, Japanese carriers are no exception to this rule.

Japan's Main Network Provider's Data Policies

In Japan, there are 3 major network operators who offer portable WiFi (mobile WiFi router) products for both consumers and businesses.

Docomo

SoftBank Group (including Y!mobile brand)

WiMAX (provided by UQ Communications, au/KDDI group)

There are slight differences in their plan offerings and stance towards data allowance, but one thing they have in common is that true unlimited data plans (which some of these providers used to offer) are disappearing. Let's briefly look at the differences in their data policies.

1️⃣ Docomo: Strict data usage policy

Among the three providers mentioned, Docomo is known for its restrictive data usage policy. As a result of this limited data policy, most Pocket WiFi rental services aimed at foreigners/travelers use routers from the other two companies.

The reason for including this company in our coverage is to give you a complete picture of the network providers who have their hand in Japan's Pocket WiFi game. However, the odds that you'll come across a Docomo routers are relatively small.

2️⃣ SoftBank: Generous data allowance policy for businesses

A typical Pocket WiFi plan under the SoftBank network offers a wide range of data allotments based on contract types, and it's considerably more generous than Docomo (with nearly the same national coverage). This is also the reason why most of the Pocket WiFi providers, especially the ones geared towards travelers, use SoftBank's Pocket WiFi.

3️⃣ WiMAX (KDDI): Used to be unlimited (now in question)

WiMAX's portable wifi router, while at one time did offer a truly unlimited data plan, has now stopped using this claim in advertisements geared towards the average consumer. This is in part due to more stringent regulations from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on what can be called "Unlimited Data".

On the other hand, the same cannot be said for WiMAX's dealings when selling rental units to other businesses. In this case the Unlimited Data plan may still exist (although I have no evidence to verify this). Aside from that, it's important to point out that WiMAX has less coverage area compared to Pocket WiFi using the SoftBank or Docomo networks (in buildings, underground, and in rural parts of Japan, although it's improving year by year). Because of this coverage weakness, WiMAX's popularity has suffered among traveler geared Pocket WiFi rental companies.

"Unlimited Data" Buzzword Is Being Abused By Pocket WiFi Providers

The service of unlimited data, while it may have existed in the past, is becoming increasingly difficult for these large networks to guarantee. Therefore Pocket WiFi devices now typically come with Fair Usage Policies.

So don't take rental company's word for it when you see Pocket WiFi being advertised as "Unlimited Data"! What that usually means, is that those rental providers will allow you to use data indefinitely but the speed will be restricted after a user exceeds a certain usage point. Some may consider it intentionally misleading to call something "Unlimited" when a Pocket WiFi rental company knows the service might not maintain the same quality if used over a certain extent in a given period of time, but we'll leave that up to you.

Below is a great example of how this "Unlimited Data" advertising tactic is being used by certain rental providers

<img src="https://www.econnectjapan.com/blog/content/images/2018/11/unlimited-data-with-speed-restriction.png" class="kg-image" alt="Does 'Unlimited Data' Really Exist in Japan Pocket WiFi Rental Plans? It would be almost impossible to use that much data over the course of your trip here in Japan. A couple of GBs a day is more than enough for the typical user to fulfill his or her internet requirements for most standard vacation lengths.

eConnect Japan Offers 20GB, 50GB, and even 100GB Plans

Instead of going after the vaguely defined "Unlimited Data" plans, why not choose plans that offer a substantial amount of GB, which is likely more than what you need?

At eConnect Japan, we provide data plans tailored for traveler, ranging from 20GB (Economy Plan) for casual internet usage to a whopping 100GB (Monster Plan). This range should comfortably cover the requirements of 99% of users.

If you're unsure whether you're a casual or heavy internet user, you probably fall somewhere in the middle. In that case, our Premium Plan (50GB of data and our most popular plan) would likely be the best fit for you.

And what's more, we always make it clear to our users how much data (GB) can be used at high speed before a possible speed restriction occurs.

💡

Those plans do not have a daily data cap, only a cap on total data allowance.

Our message is that picking a plan based on first instincts and buzzwords may end up with resulting in a service/plan that doesn't jive with your vacation usage habits. Best Advice On Renting a Pocket WiFi in Japan">
Let's bring your attention to something you may be overlooking when using mobile internet of any variety. It's a small clause typically hidden away by providers on their websites or contracts. That something is Fair Usage Policy (a.k.a FUP). Let's break down exactly what Fair Usage Policy is and give some real world examples to help bring this relatively unknown concept into light. You can then be better prepared when renting a Pocket WiFi in Japan!

What is Fair Usage Policy

In a nutshell, Fair Usage Policy is a policy utilized internationally by broadband providers of all types of mobile internet to ensure that every subscriber uses mobile data in moderation. When subscribers (users) use large amounts of mobile data, other users in the same network can be adversely affected. In order to prevent those few mass-data consumers from eating into the bandwidth of the other users, the provider will cap said abuser’s data speed. Online activities that could violate Fair Usage Policy include streaming high quality content (e.g. Netflix) for long time of period, sending or downloading extremely large data files, etc..

Although Fair Usage Policy may seem unreasonable, the reasons behind these measures are practical. Network providers implement Fair Usage Policy to ensure that everyone can have the best experience using the internet service. These providers may monitor your internet usage and if you go beyond your fair-use limit, they can restrict your network speed accordingly until the next day or month depending on the plan or contract.

Why is Fair Usage Policy needed for mobile internet?

Most user's home or office internet needs are being met with what is called fixed wireless. Fixed wireless, unlike mobile broadband, operates by connecting a physical cable between two fixed locations via a receiver. This enables data transfer at ultra high speeds but can only be utilized in densely populated areas. Fixed wireless is typically not subject to Fair Usage Policy regulations because the bandwidth supplied to each specific location is controlled by each individual connection

Mobile broadband, however, operates differently. It uses cell towers to transfer data to mobile devices, including cell phones, tablets, eReaders, etc. Imagine a broadband highway with a limited number of lanes. The volume of data used is similar to the number of vehicles on this highway. However, like any highway, there are physical limits to how many cars can run due to the limited lanes available. When the highway gets too crowded by users using too many of these data vehicles, it could result in a traffic jam of activity, thus slowing down everything and affecting all cars on the highway.

To prevent this, mobile network providers (a.k.a carriers) monitor each user's data to maintain optimal efficiency on the broadband highway. If a user is causing excessive traffic (using too much data), the provider may slow down that user's data speed to ensure a balanced usage for all.

Pocket WiFi uses mobile broadband

This may come as a surprise to some but Pocket Wifi devices are not using fixed wireless. Unlike the router in your house/business' WiFi, Pocket WiFi uses a SIM card that operates with, you guessed it, mobile network (cellular data)!

Almost all the Pocket WiFi website's include the Fair Usage Policy somewhere within the fine print in some way shape or form. Below are two examples from two of the bigger Pocket WiFi providers in Japan.

Even if the wording doesn't explicitly state "Fair Usage Policy" it contains the reminder that your data can be slowed if you exceed a certain usage limit.

Here is another example.

Are Providers Lying When They Say "Unlimited Data"?

Marketers aren't technically lying when they advertise Pocket WiFi plans as having "Unlimited Data" because, technically, you still have internet access and can use data even under restrictions.

What they're not telling in large fonts, however, is that you will experience much slower Internet connection after going beyond your fair-use limit. In short, you'll have an uncomfortable experience with the service for the rest of your rental period or at least for that day.

What Should I Look For When Renting Pocket WiFi?

When renting Pocket WiFi, the key is to understand your internet needs while traveling in Japan. Consider what activities you'll be doing online and then estimate the amount of data (in GB) that would suit your needs comfortably. Then, look for plans that guarantee that amount of GB.

Generally speaking, plans advertised as "Unlimited Data" tend to be quite expensive, so it's often more practical and cost-effective to opt for a plan with a specified GB allowance.

💡

For typical travel needs, 1 or 2GB of data per day should be more than sufficient, unless you plan on streaming videos or movies frequently.

On eConnect Japan's Pocket WiFi Rental Plans, there is information on Data Allowance under Specifications. Rich cultural history, delicious foods, and breathtaking landscapes that transform with each passing season. There's also an abundance of knowledge waiting to be uncovered, from the timeless traditions evident in cities like Kyoto and Nara, to the contemporary, embodied by the technologically advanced city of Tokyo.

When traveling, ensuring you have the internet connectivity during a vacation, business trip, or what have you, often ranks high on the priority list. When it comes to staying connected abroad, there are several options available to you: prepaid SIM cards, data roaming, or Pocket WiFi. (You could potentially rely on public free WiFi, but it's far from a guarantee for a consistent connection as it's not available everywhere and can sometimes be difficult or cumbersome to connect to.)

Among these internet options, Pocket WiFi, as know as the Japanese term for a mobile WiFi router, has gained popularity among modern travelers for many years. This might be surprising for those unsure of its advantages.

Hence, in this article, we will explain the four primary reasons (+ 2 bonus points) why Pocket WiFi can serve as the ultimate solution to your internet needs.

💡 Before getting into the detailed explanation, feel free to check our Pocket WiFi rental service in Japan 👇.

Top-Rated Pocket WiFi Rental & SIM Card for Japan Travel | eConnect

Over 5,000 Reviews! Unless you want to pay an arm and a leg to your home country’s cell provider, the only way to get data packages this large is to rent Pocket WiFi.

And let’s face it, having to monitor your data use carefully while using a 1-3GB prepaid SIM card is no fun either. Pocket WiFi’s generous data allowance will ensure you stay connected throughout the entire duration of your travels, no matter what the purpose.

Whether it's for business or leisure, having more data is always a plus!

Reason 2: Lightning-fast Speed & Low Latency

Pocket WiFi provides a stable and fast internet connection. However, it's not just about the number of Mbps you'll receive, but also about the response speed. In other words, it's the combination of high speed and low latency (meaning less sluggishness) that most likely makes it faster than other internet options.

Most Pocket WiFi rental providers in Japan, ourselves included, utilize Pocket WiFi devices from the network provider SoftBank. As such, they connect to a local carrier network, hence the low latency previously mentioned.

These WiFi devices operate on SoftBank’s 4G/LTE network and have a coverage rate of over 99% of the population. Unless you find yourself deep in the countryside, you can expect your internet speed to remain in a comfortable range. Streaming video, uploading videos and photos to social media, using navigation apps, etc.. Any of these activities are no problem!

Reason 3: Extremely Easy Set-Up

Setting up Pocket WiFi devices is incredibly straightforward. In contrast, prepaid SIM cards and public WiFi often involve annoying and sometimes confusing set-up processes.

Most prepaid SIM cards sold in Japan require you to tinker with your phone’s APN settings, and at times aren’t compatible with certain devices.

Japan’s public WiFi is definitely no easier. Many locations require you to create an account or input personal information to gain internet access.

So, why wrestle with these options when you can effortlessly connect to a Pocket WiFi? These devices link up just like your WiFi router at home. Once the device is booted up, it’s ready to go. All you need is the WiFi network name (SSID) and password, which are conveniently displayed on the device screen.

For a more detailed guide, please refer to the link below.

Set Up Pocket WiFi | Pocket WiFi and SIM provider - eConnect Japan

A step by step guide to set up and start using a Pocket WiFi device provided by eConnect Japan.

eConnect Japan

Reason 4: Multiple Device Connectivity

Pocket WiFi devices have the ability to connect all your devices simultaneously. When compared to other forms of mobile internet, Pocket WiFi unquestionably offers the most connectivity while being stable. A single one of these devices can link up to 10 devices at the same time, making it particularly useful for families traveling with children equipped with iPads.

With prepaid SIM cards, you could potentially connect other devices using your smartphone’s mobile hotspot function. However, this method typically has a limit to the number of devices it can accommodate while maintaining a quality connection.

Whether you’re on business, a YouTuber or blogger, traveling with a large group or family, odds are you’ll have more than two devices. Having a single Pocket WiFi device enables everyone to connect all their necessary devices, no matter the purpose!

Bonus Point 1: Works with ANY Devices

One of the underrated / overlooked aspects of Pocket WiFi is that it works with a wide range of devices and gadgets.

It's not just for your smartphones and tablets, but also laptops, E-Readers like Amazon Kindle, and gaming consoles such as Nintendo Switch and PlayStation Vita. This ensures a level of security comparable to what your smartphone provides in your home country.

Generally speaking, it's significantly safer to use one of these Pocket WiFi devices for internet access than relying on your hotel's WiFi, or worse yet, a random cafe's network.

FYI, this comparison is made against other WiFi networks. How does it work?">
In our increasingly interconnected world, one of the most essential yet challenging aspects of travel is ensuring you have access to a fast and stable internet connection at all times. While your home cellular company probably offers travel data plans for such needs, a more effective solution in Japan is a handy little device called Pocket WiFi which has gained popularity among modern travelers as one of the best and most reliable ways to get online and stay connected.

In this article, we cover the basics such as what Pocket WiFi is and how it provides internet connectivity.

👍

eConnect Japan offers reliable and affordable Pocket WiFi rental service in Japan for your mobile internet needs.

What is Pocket WiFi?

First thing first; whenever you see or hear any of the following terms:

Mobile hotspot

MiFi

Portable WiFi

WiFi dongle

Mobile WiFi

WiFi egg

... know that all of these terms refer to the exact same thing, POCKET WIFI.

A Pocket WiFi, as its name suggests, is a portable WiFi router that provides wireless internet access on the go. Unlike the traditional WiFi routers we have at home or in the office, Pocket WiFi is designed to travel with you.

Pocket WiFi devices are typically as compact as a small mobile battery. For example, the one shown in the image above measures approximately 10cm x 6cm x 2cm and weighs about 150g.

Small and light enough to fit easily in your pocket; these devices make it simple to stay connected anywhere without having to worry about lugging around a bulky gadget. Just make sure to bring a spare mobile battery so that you and your family or travel companions can stay connected 24/7.

Fun fact: "Pocket WiFi" is a registered trademark by SoftBank's subsidiary company Y!mobile. However, because of the term's popularity, it is now commonly used to refer to pretty much any portable device that provides the same functionality.

How does Pocket WiFi get you connected?

From a user's perspective, a Pocket WiFi works just like any WiFi device, but it is a lot smaller and portable than your traditional home WiFi router. Unlike the latter, Pocket WiFi is designed for use without location constraint, allowing you to stay connected to the web no matter where your travels take you.

From a bit more technical perspective, the Pocket WiFi operates using a Subscriber Identity Module or how it's more commonly referred to, a SIM card. This SIM card connects to a mobile / cellular network in the exact same way as smartphones do. Once the device is connected to the internet via the SIM card it gains internet connectivity via the cellular network. The device then emits a WiFi signal just like your home WiFi does, allowing any of your internet capable devices to connect via WiFi. As a result, these devices can access the internet through the cellular network, maintaining connectivity even while on the move.

Simple set-up

Connecting to a Pocket WiFi device is straightforward. Simply follow these steps:

Power on the Pocket WiFi device

Find its SSID (Network Name) and Password (*These details are typically provided with the device itself.)

Connect to it via WiFi

It's basically the same way you do with your home WiFi. Find the network username, enter the password, and boom - instant access to high speed, reliable mobile internet.

You can find more detailed guide with images in the link below.

Set Up Pocket WiFi | Pocket WiFi and SIM provider - eConnect Japan

A step by step guide to set up and start using a Pocket WiFi device provided by eConnect Japan.

<img class="kg-bookmark-icon" src="https://www.econnectjapan.com/static/apple-touch-icon.png" alt="[Explained] What is Pocket WiFi? You'll be blown away at the sheer convenience of this connectivity. Everyone in the family or the group you're traveling with will be able to use the internet for his or her specific needs.

💡

It's especially handy if you travel with kids with iPads as they can stay entertained with their favorite online games and educational apps during long journeys.

Also, because your Pocket WiFi device can only be accessed with a password, you can ensure that only those within your group are provided with a secure and fast internet connection.

Your Handy Internet Travel Buddy

Pocket WiFi boasts several notable benefits for travelers, and is truly a traveler’s best friend when it comes to staying connected during your trip to Japan.

It’s coverage, simplicity, and reliability are what really make this device outshine your other options like SIM cards and international roaming data plans from your carrier back home.

Speaking of coverage, aside from the deep countryside, you’ll never have to worry about a lack of coverage due to the fact that Pocket WiFi devices are connected to a cellular network, in most cases covering more than 99% of the population.

eConnect Japan provides reliable Pocket WiFi rental service

Here at eConnect Japan, we understand how important it is for travelers coming to Japan to be able to have access fast, reliable, and affordable internet connection in the country.

Traveling in an unfamiliar region that's so different from many other countries can be quite challenging, and Japan can sometimes prove difficult and complex to navigate. Of course many apartments, Airbnb, and dormitories come equipped with free WiFi but it can't be assumed that they are all fast and reliable. And you will still need internet when you are away from your accommodation.

This is why Pocket WiFi rental has become so popular among long-term stayers in Japan. For those who are still lost, a WiFi hotspot is a small device that allows you to connect to the internet in the same way you connect to your home WiFi network, except you can use it on the go.

Most of these devices operate the same way. You boot up, find the network username and password screen, then use the info to connect to the internet. Some of the later models, like the one pictured below, will have touch screens and other fancy bells and whistles.

Pocket WiFi 501HW | SoftBank

4 Reasons Why Pocket WiFi Rental Is Popular

‌‌1. High speed ⚡️

Having to rely on slow, laggy internet to get you through a trip in a foreign country is one of the many things that can make traveling hectic. Having access to lightning speed internet through Pocket WiFi will make your whole experience more enjoyable.

Most Pocket WiFi in Japan is connected to one of Japan's ultra high speed 4G networks meaning you'll have the speed you need to use all the internet functions you're used to at work or home. Data intensive online work like file sharing, streaming Netflix or YouTube videos buffer-free, not a problem. Navigating with Google Maps while multitasking on other apps, easy peasy.

In some rural areas you might be switched onto LTE instead of 4G but it's still more than sufficient for normal internet use.

Pocket WiFi, in general, is much faster than prepaid SIM or roaming data plans thanks to the unique frequencies these devices use.

‌‌2. Large data packages 💯

Pocket WiFi typically come with large data capacities, making them great for ensuring you'll quality internet for the whole of your stay. Also, not having to constantly monitor your data use will remove yet another element of stress from your experience. Compared to low data volume Prepaid SIM cards, you get way more per GB bang for your buck with Pocket WiFi.

‌‌3. Shareable 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Traveling with a group or your family? Other forms of mobile internet (SIM card, data roaming, international data plans) don't make much sense when you have multiple users. Pocket WiFi devices allow for upwards of 10 devices to be connected simultaneously. For YouTubers, bloggers, or even just multi-device owning travelers (let's be honest that's most of us), having this multi-connectivity is essential! Being able to connect your computer, phone, tablet, etc., all to the same source is a huge perk of using Pocket WiFi.

‌‌4. Ease of use 🧡

With a lot of the free WiFi options asking for personal info and/or requiring elaborate login processes when all you're trying to do is connect to check your texts. You may ask yourself - is there a simpler way? The answer is yes, Pocket WiFi! Pocket WiFi requires no special set-up process and is also simpler than setting up your personal cell phone provider's plan to work abroad. You simply log in and go!

How and where to rent a Pocket WiFi

Where to order one?

There are two ways to get your hands on a Pocket WiFi device for your trip to Japan, renting online beforehand, or after you arrive at the Airport in Japan.

There are a couple companies offering WiFi rental services at international airports throughout Japan, so it may seem like just waiting and renting one at the airport is your best bet. However, we strongly recommend that you order a portable WiFi device online prior to your arrival, and here's why.

International traveling is already stressful enough as it is. You get off the plane, collect your luggage, go through Customs, and navigate your way through and out of a foreign airport. Adding the extra step of choosing one of the many Pocket WiFi kiosks in the airport, comparing their pricing, and having to haggle with the person behind the counter who may not know perfect English, adds a whole other dimension of hassle to an already tiresome experience.

Purchasing ahead of time online allows you greater control over the dates you reserve for, where you have the device sent to/return from (ie. hotel, airport post office), and is cheaper because there's no Airport tax involved. So do yourself a favor and get the your mobile internet reservations out of the way before you get to Japan. You'll thank your future self!

What are the steps for online ordering?

The rental process is fairly straightforward. You first order one online. Then fly to Japan and collect your Pocket WiFi using one of the available pick options (the most popular options are airports, hotels, and residences). Note that international shipping is not available due a number of factors, high cost, long ship times, and Customs' restrictions on batteries.

When you finish your rental, you simply slip it in a post box with the prepaid envelope provided. (Some companies have a counter at airports where you can return your rental items.)

Now let's take a look at the top 5 contenders in Japan's pocket wifi rental game.

Top 5 WiFi rental providers in Japan

You can find the following top 5 companies by doing a quick google search for "pocket wifi rental japan". All these companies have been in the portable WiFi rental business for more than 5 years and have established a good reputation among their customers.

We picked the 5 factors below to compare each company's service from various aspects.

1. Website User Interface 🖥‌‌
Ease-of-use/smoothness of interface. Pocket WiFi is highly recommended for its fast speed and large data allowance. The other possible option for mobile internet would be to purchase a Prepaid SIM card. Setup for Japanese prepaid SIM is a bit technical and requires APN configuration where as Pocket WiFi is as minimal as the phrase “plug and play”. Also the fact that SIM cards cannot be used by network-locked smartphones makes their use limited whereas Pocket WiFi is universal and can connect up to 10 devices at once. For these reasons this article recommends Pocket WiFi over Prepaid SIM cards, but if you want more information to compare, please check one of our previous blog post here.

Comparing Pocket WiFi vs Prepaid SIM for your trip to Japan

If you’re traveling to Japan for the first time, never assume that you will get free WiFi just about anywhere. It is easy to set up and connect to, you can connect multiple devices (up to 10) at once, and the plans that we are offering can accommodate the heavy data and high speed connection needs of a gamer or the low frequency and light data user. Let's check out the plans and consider which type of user would benefit the most from each plan.

What plan is suitable for whom?

eConnect Japan currently offers 3 Pocket WiFi plans: Economy, Premium, and Monster Plan.

The difference between them is the guaranteed high speed data allowance.

Please note that all of them covers more than 99% of the populations under SoftBank cellular network, assuring you the best coverage throughout Japan.

Pocket WiFi Economy Plan

Service Description:
This plan gives you a total of 10GB (10,000MB) for 4G/LTE speed. This is the cheapest model among our Pocket WiFi offers (and possibly the cheapest in the market). Rental available for up to 30 days.

User Profile:
For budget travelers who won't be needing so much data. This is also a good choice for people staying for less than a week.

Pricing:
A 7-day rental costs around less than $50. The daily rental fee can go as low as 277 yen if rent for more than 3 weeks.

Bottom Line:
Anyone who are happy with 10GB data should try this plan. If you are a light data user, 10GB should be enough for a couple of weeks or longer. If you are staying for a couple of days only, 10GB is just the right amount actually regardless of your internet activities.

Pocket WiFi Premium Plan

Service Description:
This plan gives you a total of 50GB of 4G/LTE high speed data regardless of the rental days. 50GB data is plenty for almost all travelers and is also good for heavy data users or families staying a week or two in Japan. This is the most popular plan at eConnect Japan. Rental available for up to 60 days.

User Profile:
It suits for pretty much anyone: sole traveler, a couple or a family with normal / heavy internet activity during their travel in Japan. It becomes amazingly cheap for daily rental rate if you rent it for more than a month.

Conclusion

It probably boils down to 1. how much data (GB) you'd like to have and 2. your budget when it comes to deciding which Pocket WiFi plan to go for.

All of our Pocket WiFi plans use SoftBank High-speed 4G/LTE network that covers more than 99% of the populations so the speed and coverage area are exactly the same.

We suggest that you mull over what you are going to use internet for and how much data you will likely be using per day or in the entire trip. Then it's pretty easy to narrow down the options to find the best suited one for your travel in Japan.

And if you are still not sure which plan would suit you best, just go with the Premium Plan! You won't be disappointed.

One thing we can say in confidence is that any of our Pocket WiFi provides fast internet that covers across Japan. And unless you are streaming videos all day long, the default data allotment on any plan should be sufficient because we design it in that way so that normal internet use won't reach the data limit.

With the information provided above in mind, let's head over to our Pocket WiFi plan page below and start planning your mobile internet option today!

Top Reviewed 4G, LTE Pocket WiFi Rental in Japan | eConnect

High-speed 4G, LTE Pocket WiFi is available for hire from less than $3 a day. One of those methods, is by getting Pocket WiFi or SIM card, or simply use roaming service. They all use secure closed networks which keep your data private. The other method is to use the various open/public networks, a.k.a. free WiFi, that are widely available throughout Japan. However, using open sources of WiFi, like at hotels or restaurants, can pose major security risks to your data and need to be used with caution. One simple solution is to purchase and activate a VPN service when accessing those open/public networks. Today, I'll discuss my experience purchasing and testing one of the most popular VPNs out there – ExpressVPN on my iPhone in Japan.

What's a VPN and why use it

A VPN, or virtual private network, is a network that helps protect your data by encrypting it between two secure points. VPNs operate by routing your internet connections through a private server in order to keep your data secure. This is what makes VPNs so useful when traveling in a country with numerous free WiFi access points like Japan, that may leave your personal data venerable to hackers and cyberattacks. Especially when there has been a recent trend among cybercriminals to target travelers, which makes it especially important to protect your personal information while accessing the internet abroad.

As I said, when you’re traveling in a country like Japan, there are endless opportunities to use free Wi-Fi in places like hotels, at train stations, and a host of other places we discussed in a previous article about where to find free WiFi in Japan 2019. So it’s important to keep in mind that your data is vulnerable, especially when accessing free WiFi. This is where a VPN comes in. By installing one of these VPN services onto your computer, you can safely and securely access the internet, even when using these typically high-risk network pathways. The best use (and the time that it needs to be used most while abroad), is when you attempt to do online banking or access personal information (social media, etc.) on the internet. There are other instances when using a VPN can come in handy though, like when a specific IP address is blocked by the service provider (e.g. Netflix), also called geo-locking.

For those of you out there who are considering using a VPN, today I will be demonstrating how to purchase and install a VPN on my iPhone XR. For this article, I'll be testing the service ExpressVPN in Japan. One of the more reliable VPN services out there. That being said, there are hundreds of VPN services on the market, I’m just using one to show how to set up your phone to be VPN capable.

Setup and Tested in Japan

Purchase & Setup

First head on over to the ExpressVPN site on either your smartphone or computer.

The service is only $13 a month for 1 month. But if you do a full year it ends up being a bit cheaper around $8.32 a month (but you have to pay $99.95 for 12 months).

Once you enter your email address and put in your method of payment, you have officially purchased the service. After purchasing, you do need to authenticate your account using the link sent to your email.

Now that you've authenticated your subscription via email, let's move over to the iPhone. First, let’s grab the express VPN app from the iOS App Store. Once purchased, open and input the login credentials you just received. After you've logged in successfully, give the app permission to add VPN configurations (shown above). Great! Now the VPN should be up and running (you can check this by seeing the VPN symbol shown in the upper left hand side of the control panel).

The cool thing about using one of these services that alters the VPN settings for you, is that from now on, when you want to toggle the VPN on and off (when you're about to jump onto free WiFi for example), you can just hop into your settings menu and switch it on and off from there (see pic above).

Test & Thoughts

I personally used this VPN service a number of times while connecting to public WiFi networks while in Japan. I paired using this service with using one of the free WiFi locator apps we talked about on one of our last blogs. This helped me first find some of the 100 thousand+ free WiFi locations and know I was accessing them safely and securely. For example, when I was using public networks at places like 7/11, Starbucks, and McDonalds.

One other cool thing I was able to accomplish, during my brief stint testing this service, was changing my geo-location from Japan back to the States in order to catch the season finale of Game of Thrones, and it worked like a charm... even though my thoughts on that ending were less than charming! This is one of the other benefits of using a VPN, besides keeping your data safe while connected to untrustworthy network sources.

One major drawback of VPN services is that they typically have a monthly fee which can be expensive. The flip side to this coin, however, is there is no price tag on keeping your data safe. This is because you may end up losing more money by accessing things like banking systems while not using a VPN on public WiFi networks.

From its vibrant, robust city life, to its quaint and nostalgic mountain towns and nature, all of these factors have led to Japan becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Asia.

For travelers from western countries, however, the vast difference in language and culture can be quite a hurdle to get over, especially when it comes to basic things like navigating. How do you find your way from the airport to your hotel? How do you get to the delicious Michelin stared sushi restaurant you've been dying to go to. This is where navigation apps come in. Also, the user interface is very simple.

Available Platforms:

iOS App Store

Google Play Store

The app is also available on the web.

Japan Transit Planner iOS app

Once you download and open the app, the screen to your upper left will appear. This screen has a simple two inputs. Put in departing and arriving station and your route will pop up as shown on the right hand screen above. The app provides you with a decent amount of information, including train numbers as well as boarding platform number. The drawbacks though, are that there are no alternate routes to choose from and you can't search for stations in your area, an essential function, I may add, for someone completely new to the country. This lack of any sort of useable map feature is what ranks this app at the bottom of our list. This app is probably best suited for those who are frequent Japan visitors and/or live here and are already familiar with their surroundings (station names, areas, etc.).

#3 Japan Travel by NAVITIME

Taking solid third place on our list is the Japan Travel app by NAVITIME. This app was closely tied with 2nd place on our list, Japan Official Travel App, but loses out barely for a couple of reasons that we will cover!

Available Platforms:

iOS App Store

Google Play Store

For starters, this is a very well put together app. This follows the trend that a lot of travel apps in Japan are doing lately, which is functioning as so much more than just a navigation app. This app is no exception to that trend. This app is basically a mini tour guide in your pocket. Offering you additional services like current blogs, travel tips, and even a cool offline ATM, currency exchange, and free WiFi locator function (something I haven't actually tested though). However, since this article is about comparing the navigational aspects of these applications we will stick to its usefulness in this sector.

Japan Travel by NAVITIME iOS app

Once you download the app, open it up and go to the route tab. Type in your departing station as well as your destination. You can also choose current location as your starting position and then your destination and let the app do it for you. From there, select from your many route options and boom! You're as good as there. This app does a phenomenal job of giving you the ability to customize options (better than even google maps in some respects). You can search by routes that allow you to use Japan Rail Pass or Tokyo Subway Tickets, search by routes that avoid stairs (for people with disabilities), by cheapest option, and even search by which is most eco-friendly. This was a really cool feature that I haven't found in many other nav apps.

For all the cool frills that this app has in terms of additional services, one thing the navigational component is lacking, is the fact that if you want to use the interactive map (Google Maps-like step by step navigation) where it shows you on the map your route as well as current location, that's a paid service. Super unfortunate, because if they were able to make this free, this app might have ranked higher on the list. Also, the apps interface leaves something to be desired and is at times difficult to navigate.

Once there, input your starting position. This app allows you to choose your current location and will actually show you a map of your position as well if you click on the little map icon. Once thing that makes this app so awesome for travelers is that it prioritizes routes using the JR Pass. This allows travelers to know which routes will allow them to the extremely convenient pass system and which routes they will need to buy tickets for. Just look for the little JR Pass symbol next to the routes in the search result screen. But what truly sets this part above of our number 3 pick, is that it has a free interactive map feature. Just go into the Spot tab and click on the Stations button. The nearest station to you should show up on the screen. If you click on the station, the station name and distance from your current location will pop up on the screen. Once you click into the station, touch the middle route button. Search from your current position and click the little map icon to bring up an actual route.

Some drawbacks of this app is there is a lot going on. You can sync routes to your calendar and even have google remind you when it's time to transfer trains (something you'll be doing quite frequently in Japan I may add). Another strong point is its route option customization. You can adjust for many factors including wheelchair accessibility, cheapest routes, and fewest transfers. Also the interface allows you to search for places nearby and compare them quickly with solid reviews. I mean this is all pretty standard knowledge for anyone who has used Google Maps before.

Some downsides are its lack of offline capabilities and other travel guide related features.
I was able to use the WiFi for sending a couple messages via WhatsApp and Facebook as well as check my emails. The problem was that the connection was very unreliable. I would be able to use it for a couple minutes and then it would drop out on me. After conducting the speed test I could tell why. Here were my speed test results:

As you can see from my results, the download speeds were incredibly slow and the upload speeds remained okay for most of the time. This explains why I was able to send and responds to things but also why it took forever for me to load a single webpage or receive a response while using messaging apps.

Bear in mind that these speeds could also have been affected by the time of day and/or by how many people were using the network at the time of this speed test.

Overall, my impressions were less than favorable. The WiFi worked to upload but had abysmally low download speeds. This ruined my chance at a decent internet experience. Also, the multitude of security risks involved with using free WiFi that didn't provide me with a solid connection just didn't seem worth it from a cost/benefit point of view. One strong point was that the service was very simple to log into.

More Reliable Forms of Mobile Internet

My test reveals that all free forms of WiFi are not created equal. Once you're at the establishment with free WiFI you would like to connect to, open up the WiFi settings on your iOS device. Browse the WiFi options for the network that specifically says Japan Wi-Fi underneath.

Once you've connected to the right network, go back into the Japan Wi-Fi app and it will automatically go through the same connection process as you'd do with the Android.

Once the network has been authenticated by the app, you will be free to use the WiFi connection.

Offline Map Download

For those of you out there wondering how you would use the application without already being connected to the internet, the app does feature an offline map option.

To use from the main menu click Search > Map Download

You can then choose from a number of predetermined regions. Each region has a number of famous sightseeing areas available for download.

Keep in mind that the amount of time you're able to use free WiFi will vary from spot to spot. Each free WiFi spot is regulated by a different company (for example at the convenience store Lawsons, you're only allowed to use the WiFi for hourlong increments).

How well does it work?

Pros

Map function allows you to see all free WiFi access points in any given area (if you're already connected to the internet)

One time login

Downloadable map areas

Cons

The app has poor interface that is difficult to use

The app can mess with the settings on your device

The offline map function is limited to certain areas

I had no trouble connecting to these networks and using them for basic internet browsing and navigation apps. I did run in to trouble however, when I attempted to use streaming apps like YouTube and Apple Music.

As we discussed in a previous article about safety when accessing free WiFi sources, downloading/uploading over these networks is never a good idea in the first place, but for the sake of the internet speed test, I thought I would attempt to download something from the iOS App Store. The internet was not fast enough for app store use (on my iPhone).

The map function of the application also left somethings to be desired. Although the app allows you to download offline maps, you are only able to download maps for specific areas. If you're anywhere outside those main sightseeing spots you can't download offline maps. Also, the blue dot that represents current location is not always accurate even when using the downloaded map packs.

Solid Alternatives - Pocket WiFi / SIM Cards

After testing out the Japan-WiFi app in Japan I have concluded that although it has it's merits, the lack of a usable interface and the ability to use the map function without an internet connection would make depending on this application for your vacation internet needs for the entire duration of your trip very difficult.

I could see this service being helpful to those travelers out there who have purchased a SIM card that has a lower data limit and want to supplement their SIM card by using free WiFi when it's convenient.

But an easier way to ensure big data limits, reliability, and fast data speeds is to rent a Pocket WiFi device for your vacation to Japan.
